Rare. A fascinating example of late-Victorian quack medicine ephemera produced by Bile Beans, an infamous laxative manufacturer based in Leeds, UK. The company used fear mongering to sell their product, a sugar-coated laxative pill which was fraudulently advertised as a secret plant-based ingredient discovered by an explorer in Australia. This pamphlet uses old wives tales, folklore and common magical superstitions as "omens" or signs of failing health which can only be cured by purchasing their product. The company was taken to court several times for swindling customers with fake advertising and inciting fear in the local population.
In good condition with the spine re-stitched, light handling wear, rusting staples, rubbing to rear. Bound in the original illustrated wrappers with a witch illustration to the front, company advertising to the rear, discoloured with age but generally clean and attractive. 20 x 15 cm. Pp. 24.
