C.1880s Kachi-Kachi Mountain [Japanese Fairy Tale Series No.5]

A scarce copy of Kachi-Kachi Mountain, the fifth instalment in the Japanese Fairy Tale Series. Undated but most likely published in the late 1880s, the title follows the traditional Japanese folk story of a cunning rabbit tasked with avenging the death of a farmer's wife. Titles from this series are highly collectable and quite difficult to find, especially in this early crepe paper format. Illustrated throughout in the traditional Meiji-era style, the book symbolises the relatively new relationship forming between Japanese literature and western publishing.

In good condition with light edge wear, the odd small mark, a small indentation to the middle of the block, light creasing and end wear to the spine. The binding consists of 22 pages of folded crepe paper (including covers) bound against a silk spine. 15 x 9.5 cm. Unpaginated.
