Second edition. A handsome collection of tips and tricks for practicing appropriate behaviour in Victorian high society, containing important advice for budding socialites including sections on making conversation, writing elegant letters, how to react to a death or birth, and lengthy sections regarding titles and meeting with royalty/nobility successfully. Scarce.

Corners gently bumped, small marks to boards, small nicks to edges, light foxing to prelims, generally clean interiors. Black and white frontispiece. Bound in the original green publisher’s cloth with gilt-stamped titles and decorative borders to the front board, borders repeated to rear board and spine. Pink endpapers, all edges gilt. Very good overall. Pp. [5], 215. 16.5 x 10 cm.

“Remember that you go into society to please yourself only in so far as you can derive pleasure from pleasing others. Therefore learn the art of being interested in everybody’s twaddle.” [Pg. 47]
