First edition, first impression. The first of the novels Du Maurier wrote at Menabilly, the country estate which inspired her best-selling novel Rebecca. The King's General is a gothic historical novel set in during the English Civil War, following a wonderfully unique heroine, Honor Harris, as she tries to negotiate a family and country ravaged by conflict. The novel was a passion project for Du Maurier, who carried out extensive research in order to create an accurate representation of the southern English counties in the mid-17th Century.
