First illustrated edition. A stunning Papé-illustrated project published as part of the artist's contribution to the works of Anatole France. Mother of Pearl is a collection of short stories, with settings that range from historical to contemporary. France uses the stories to subvert or question traditional perspectives on authority, religion, and morality with his characteristic wit and humour. Illustrated with striking black and white scenes by an underrated master of the Golden Age.

In very good condition with some small marks to the spine, gente rubbing to the corners, foxed prelims, and a slight wobble to the front board. Generally very clean and firm within. Bound in black cloth with gilt-stamped motifs and titles to the front board and spine, illustrated endpapers, top edge sprayed red. 24.5 x 16 cm. Pp. viii, 291, [5].
