First illustrated edition. A charming Papé-illustrated edition of Anatole France's religious satire, Penguin Island, in which a near-sighted monk discovers an island populated by Penguins and believes them to be human. When he begins baptising the birds, God intervenes. Illustrated with gloriously whimsical black and white scenes by one of the underrated greats of the Golden Age.
In good to very good condition with scuffing to the lower front board, gently knocked corners, a tanned block edge and two owner's stamps to endpapers and prelims. Generally clean inside. Firmly bound in black cloth with gilt-stamped motifs and titles to the front board and spine, illustrated endpapers, top edge sprayed red. 24.5 x 16 cm. Pp. xxii, 345, [3].
