First published in 1850, The Scarlet Letter is known as one of the great American novels, earning its author a level of financial security which freed him from poverty and allowed him to write later popular works. The novel is still regarded as a masterpiece of Romantic literature, blending reality and fantasy to create a discussion around the conscience of Puritanism in America.
