Reprint of the 1909 first edition. A wonderful collection of legends from the Middle Ages generously illustrated with a colour frontispiece by Willy Pogany, and 63 monochrome plates by Pogany, Evelyn Paul, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and numerous other celebrated artists of the era and prior. The author, Helene Adeline Guerber, was an American educator and author most well known for her mythological retellings.
In good plus condition with several marks and scratches to the boards, gently bumped corners, two ink inscriptions to the front free endpaper, and light foxing. The binding does have a slight musty aroma, and there is evidence of light historical damp to the interior hinges. Now fully dry with attractive plates and a sound binding. Bound in the publisher's decorative blue cloth, blind and giltstamped across the front board and spine with intricate botanicals and a period motif. Gilt titles and gilt top edge. 22 x 14.5 cm. xiv, pp. 404.
