Third imp. From the library at Halsdon House, owned by Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts and his wife Shirley. De La Motte Fouque's beloved tragic tale of a water spirit who marries a bold knight in order to gain a human soul. Featuring 15 mounted colour plates by legendary British artist Arthur Rackham. The title expresses some of Rackham's most diverse representations of water: "which he depicts as stylized metallic waves, like chased decoration on a pewter bowl, or as greeny blue reedy depths with the sun filtering through." [Hamilton, Arthur Rackham: A Life with Illustration, pg. 101].

In good condition with scratches to the edge of the front board, a lightly sunned spine, visible printing cut-offs between plates, foxed endpapers, general light wear. Bound in blue canvas with gilt-stamped titles and aquatic motifs to the front and spine, endpapers also illustrated by Rackham. 25.5 x 18.5 cm. Pp. [vii], viii, [2], 136.
