A staple title for any vintage book collection. The Ingoldsby Legends are a collection of late Georgian and early Victorian ghost stories, myths and mysteries. They were penned, under a now widely-recognised pseudonym, by the clergyman Richard Harris Barham and originally published as a serial in 1837. The stories were extremely popular, leading to several book format editions being produced from the 1840s onwards. This copy from 1911 is a prize binding from the prestigious King Henry VIII private day school in Coventry, England, and includes black and white illustrations by some of the most popular caricaturists of the 19th century.

In good condition with a small split to the upper spine, the spine generally worn, light rubbing to the board corners and edges, the front hinge weakened but holding, light foxing and a bookplate adhered to the front pastedown. Bound in an attractive tree calf binding with the school insignia stamped in gilt to the front board, gilt spine compartments, a title label with gilt lettering, raised bands, blind inner dentelles and marbled endpapers. 19.5 x 13 cm. Pp. lv, 527.
