Reprint. Very handsomely bound by Relfe Brothers of London. A classic memoir which chronicles the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1886–1889. The mission, led by Stanley, aimed to rescue Eduard Schnitzer (Emin Pasha), the besieged colonial governor of a region now recognised as part of South Sudan. The group marched over 400 miles up the Congo River under conditions which led to great loss of life, a controversy which plagued the memoir despite it becoming an instant bestseller.

In very good condition with a school bookplate to the front pastedown, light rubbing to the spine ends, map slightly torn, light foxing to rear, and a slightly sunned spine. Pages generally clean and bright, scratches at a minimum, gilt bright and attractive. Bound by Relfe Brothers in bottle green calf with gilt borders, Ghyll Bank School insignia gilt-stamped to the centre of the front board, raised spine bands with gilt compartments and red leather spine label, gilt edge dentelles, marbled endpapers with blind inner dentelles, and marbled block edges. A lovely item illustrated and inclusive of folding map. 19 x 12.5 cm. Pp. xviii, 685.
