A particularly handsome edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's most beloved novel, Cranford, in a stunning art nouveau binding by A. A. Turbayne. Turbayne was a celebrated book designer from the USA, though he made his home in London, UK. His signature gilt-stamped boards feature his insignia, a delicate scarab beetle, which can be spotted on the lower right corner of this binding's front board.
In very good condition with slight bumping to lower corners, the gutter cracking at the end of the preface, an ink inscription to the front free endpaper, and lightly foxed preliminaries. Generally very attractive and solidly bound, containing a plethora of wonderful Thomson illustrations. Bound in navy cloth with bright gilt-stamped ornamentation to the front board and spine, all edges also brightly gilt. 20 x 13 cm. Pp. xxx, 297, [2].
