A handsome set of George Eliot's major works consisting of 8 novels in 7 volumes. Inclusive of the novels Adam Bede, Felix Holt, Daniel Deronda, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Scenes of a Clerical Life, Middlemarch, and Romola. George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) was one of the Victorian era's most popular novelists, who managed to sustain a career in writing despite the scandalous nature of her marriage.

Her pen-name was borrowed from her long-term partner, George Henry Lewes, who was already married. She made the radical move to live with Lewes and his wife, using a pen-name to separate her work from the scandal of her unconventional domestic life.

This set is in very good condition, with some wear and weakening to outer hinges. All boards are still attached. Some bumps and chips to the leather in places, particularly the spines, where some gilt lettering has also been rubbed away. Lightly foxed preliminaries, generally clean. Bound by Riviere in half brown calf with beige canvas boards. Raised bands and gilt motifs to the spines, marbled endpapers, gilt top edges. Complete. Uniformly 19 x 13. Pp. 466, 486, 280 & 330, 504, 621, 430, 612
