First edition thus. A classic collection of poems from the king of American Gothic literature, Edgar Allan Poe. Published by The Roycrofters, a small New York publishing house established by writer and activist Elbert Hubbard who was immensely inspired by William Morris' Kelmscott Press when visiting England in the 1890s. The house specialised in fine bookbindings, custom-cut engravings (as seen here at the title page), and reviving hand-illumination for the American market.
In good condition with a stain to the front, some separation to the endpapers and their silk covers, discolouration to the edge of the leather in places, generally clean and firmly bound text block. This copy is accompanied by two newspaper clippings, one loose and the other taped in, concerning Poe and his work. One clipping includes a report on Poe's centenary event at the Author's Club in 1909, which was presided over by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Bound in yapp suede with pressed central title label to the front cover. Haunting unsigned frontispiece portrait and woodcut title page. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. 25 x 16 cm. Pp. [4], v, 55.
