A typically late-Victorian edition of Charlotte Bronte's novel The Professor, which was originally written in 1846, before the success of Jane Eyre, but continually supressed by her publisher until after her death. This edition also includes poems by the three sisters bound after the novel itself. The novel follows a young man who turns away from family pressures to become independent, eventually moving across Europe and settling. The publishers originally argued that the novel lacked drama, but readers are now coming to appreciate the freshness of Charlotte's first steps as a novelist.

In good to very good condition with some light edge wear, particularly at the spine ends, foxing to preliminary pages, rear board a little weak but not cracking, the odd handling mark, and a foxed block edge. This edition is illustrated with 5 black and white engravings. Bound in the publisher's original green cloth with black and gilt stamping to the spine and front board. Includes a 1920s postcard used as a bookmark. 20.5 x 13.5 cm. Pp. [v] xii, 506, [ii] of rear advertising.
