A scarce copy of The Cub's Triumph, number 12 in Kobunsha/Hasegawa's Japanese Fairy Tale Series. Undated but published 1887, first edition. The title follows the traditional Japanese folk story of a young fox cub who uses his cunning to survive betrayal at the hands of other hungry animals. Titles from this series are highly collectable and quite difficult to find, especially in this early crepe paper format. Illustrated throughout in the traditional Meiji-era style by Sensai Eitaku, the book symbolises the relatively new relationship forming between Japanese literature and western publishing.

In good to very good condition with light edge wear, light wear to the hinges, some faint discolouration to the front cover and spine. Generally clean within. The binding consists of 26 pages of folded crepe paper (including covers) bound against a silk spine. 15 x 9.5 cm. Unpaginated.
