The complete poetical works of Robert Southey (1774-1843), a Romantic poet and Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death. Like may of his contemporaries, Southey began his career as a radical but leaned steadily into conservative politics during his tenure as Laureate. He is most well-known for his version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, which has become the standard.
In very good condition with a sunned spine, light foxing, a few light scratches here and there. Bookplate to the front pastedown and outer gilt motif confirms the book was awarded to a student at Charing Cross Medical School. Illustrated half-title and frontispiece portrait. Fully bound in red calf leather with raised spine bands, gilt compartments and a green title label to spine. Marbled endpapers, marbled edges and crisp gilt edge dentelles. 25.5 x 16 cm. xxviii, pp. 828.
