Select publications from the works of Charles Kingsley, English educator, clergyman and author. Alongside his work as a writer, Kingsley was a professor of modern history at the University of Cambridge, the private tutor of the Prince of Wales Edward VII, and eventually, canon of Westminster Abbey. His novels were very popular in mid-Victorian and late-Victorian Britain, and this set includes two of his most popular titles, The Heroes (illustrated by Kingsley), and Westward Ho!, an action-packed historical novel revolving around conflict with the Spanish Armada. This set belonged to Evelyn Graham Tobin Abercrombie, the daughter of Liverpool Mayor James Aspinall Tobin.

In very good condition with a few small external scratches, gently rubbed corners and edges, ever so slightly sunned spines, and Evelyn's beautiful bookplate adhered to the front pastedown of Alton Locke. Newspaper clipping concerning Mrs. Kingsley pasted into front. Firmly half-bound in blue calf with marbled boards, raised spine bands, gilt compartments and contrastic title labels to the spine, marbled endpapers and marbled block edges. Uniformly 18.5 x 12 cm. xx, pp. 324; cxvii, 436; xvii, 18-495; xiv, 345; 591; xviii, 218.
