A collection of poetical works by the Scottish poet and professor William Edmonstoune Aytoun, including his most famous work, Lays of the Scottsh Cavaliers. The publication's success was bolstered by Queen Victoria's passion for all things Scotland, and contributed to a mid-century romantic resurgence in Scottish poetry. This copy is a prize binding from the London School of Dental Surgery, and was awarded to a student in 1889. Wonderfully illustrated by the Paton brothers.
In very good condition with a few nicks and scratches to the boards, a slightly sunned spine, rubbed corners, a bookplate to the front pastedown, and foxed preliminaries. Bound in full red calf leather with gilt central motif to the front board, raised spine bands with botanical gilt ornamentation, a black title label, gilt edge dentelles, marbled edges and endpapers. 25 x 19 cm.
