Author's Edition Entire. A stunning 4-volume set of Sir Walter Scott's novels, containing 25 publications from his extensive body of work. The novels of Scott were, for much of the 19th century, amongst the most widely enjoyed pieces of fiction amongst British readers.
Amongst his biggest fans were the Bronte sisters, with Charlotte in particular holding him in high esteem. When recommending a reading list to her friend Ellen Nussey, Charlotte famously stated "for fiction - read Scott alone, all novels after his are worthless".
This collection was gifted to a student at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, and carries an institution bookplate to vol I. In very good condition with hinges slightly wobbly but holding very well, slightly rubbed externally. Some light scratches and rubbing to edges, spines a little sunned. Generally clean inside with frontispieces to each volume, and sporadic black and white illustrations. Fully bound in scarlet calf leather and ornamented with gilt institution insignias to the front boards, raised spine bands with gilt compartments and title labels, marbled edges and endpapers. A lovely set. 23 x 14 cm. Pp. 1078, 1050, 1108, 1015.
