First edition. A smart rebound two-volume first edition copy of Phineas Finn, a Victorian classic and part of Anthony Trollope's Palliser series. While it is part of a series, Phineas Finn can be read as a standalone project, with its own contained plot and characters from the previous novel barely making an appearance. The novel follows a charming Irishman who enters the British Parliament as a Liberal MP. He becomes entangled in several complicated romantic relationships with women of different social classes, before having to choose between his career and his morals. While having a gripping romantic subplot, the novel explores class inequality during a time of intense political upheaval for Irish citizens under colonial rule. The first edition includes 20 black and white engravings by Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood founder J. E. Millais.
In good condition, rebound with the original cloth laid over. Small binding gaps as expected to cloth covers at top and tail of the spine. Handling wear and the odd scuff to the boards, preliminaries foxed, visible binding tape, tissue guards tanned, general shelfwear. Green cloth with blind patterns around the edges, gilt titles to centre of front board, gilt titles faded at the spines. Uniformly 23 x 14 cm. Pp. [viii], 320; [viii], 328.
