A delightful copy of Lord Macaulay's Lays, a collection of episodic dramatic poems inspired by events and individuals from the early days of Rome. The project was initially published in 1842 and remained popular for many decades. This particular copy is in an unusual binding, and belonged to Frank Tobin CBE (1849-1927), a rugby player and stockbroker. Tobin received the book while studing at the prestigious Rugby School in Warwickshire.

In very good condition with a sunned spine and inner board portion, bumped and rubbed corners, lightly worn spine bands, light foxing throughout, inscription to forward blank, two bookplates. Beautifully bound in full morocco leather with gilt and blind stamped motifs and titles to the front board and spine. Illustrated throughout with black and white pieces by George Sharf. 22 x 17 cm. Pp. 210.
