1857 The Professor. A Tale by Charlotte Bronte [First American Edition]

First American edition. A rather special copy of Charlotte Bronte's first novel, The Professor, which was her first finished manuscript. The novel was rejected by publishers multiple times during her lifetime, only to be posthumously published after her widower's intervention in 1857. This copy is the first American edition of the novel, released under Harper and Brothers one month after the first British edition.

In good condition with soiled endpapers, rubbed edges and corners, stains to covers, some minor loss to cloth on the spine ends, an ink inscription from Chicago on the front pastedown, lightly tanned prelims and block edges. Pages a little strained in places but holding well. An interesting item for a Bronte collector. Bound in the original publisher's blindstamped brown cloth with yellow endpapers and gilt titles to the spine. 19.5 x 13 cm. Pp. vii, 330, [2] adverts.
