First edition. A delightful collection of illustrated poetry concerning the Christian sabbath, the harmony of nature, prayer, and reflection. Illustrated with colour-tinted engravings by Birket Foster, one of the most popular watercolourists and engravers during the Victorian era. While he was originally from the north of England, Foster's calm bucolic illustrations of the rural south created an attractive image that was used by advertisers well into the early 20th century. First editions not particularly common.

In good to very good condition with light foxing, some wear to the edges, spine ends, and corners. A small stain to the front cover, even fainter scuffs at the rear. Generally attractive and firm with lovely engravings. Bound in a charming blindstamped brown cloth with a central giltstamped title piece, accompanied by gilt botanicals. Further gilt titles to the spine, all edges gilt. 23 x 17cm. Pp. [2], 111.
