First edition. A nicely bound two-volume set of historical biographies concerning the queens of the English and Celtic nations before the Norman conquest of 1066. The publication is well researched, and includes scarce biographical information regarding early queens such as Cartimandua of the Brigantes, making it a wonderful addition to any collection concerning historical women in positions of power.
This copy belonged to Evelyn Graham Tobin Abercrombie, the daughter of Liverpool Mayor James Aspinall Tobin, and features her stunning bookplate to the front alongside a handwritten ownership inscription on loose paper.
In very good condition with sunned spines and upper boards, a couple of pages chipped at the corner, light edge wear and foxed preliminaries. Features two engraved frontispieces. Half-bound in tan calf leather by Morell binders of London, with marbled boards and endpapers, raised spine bands and gilt compartments, and contrast title labels. Uniformly 20 x 12.5 cm. xv, pp. 403; x, 397.
