Third edition. A very handsomely rebound copy of Edward Newman's ever-popular guide to British ferns, a publication originally printed in 1840, which contributed significantly to the early stages of Pteridomania, or 'fern-madness' which swept across British society in the mid-late Victorian era. The movement was especially popular with middle-class women, who were able to travel widely and socialise unchaperoned while collecting samples for their fern collections. This edition is generously illustrated with black and white engravings and scientific diagrams.

In very good condition, rebound, firm and square, with clean pages. Only a slight patch of rubbing to the spine's title label. Half-bound in modern dark green calf with marbled boards, raised spine bands and gilt lettering, and a fully marbled edge. Very attractive. 21.5 x 13.5 cm. [vii], viii-xxxii, pp. 1-424, [ii].
