A selection of tales by the Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth, who was once a very popular realist writer of the early 19th Century. She has been somewhat overlooked by readers in the last 100 years, but Edgeworth's moral tales were extremely popular when Victorian society was at its most uptight. She was also a favourite writer of Jane Austen.
These volumes have sadly been separated from a set of 18, but are all complete works in their subsets so can be enjoyed without the lost volumes. Amongst them is an essay entitled 'Thoughts on Bores', which is a wonderful piece of sarcastic cultural writing.
In very good condition with the bookplate of Frederick Lehmann to each front pastedown, worn corners and edges, a few handling marks, and foxed preliminaries. Half-bound in red lineated leather with pink textured boards, gilt spine titles, gilt floral spine compartments between raised bands, a gilt top edge and marbled endpapers. An excellent addition to any collection celebrating Irish women. 17 x 11 cm. Pp. 360, 362; 340, 360, 360; 328; 396.
