A scarce early American edition of Lord Byron's works, published in Philadelphia just 5 years after the poet's death in Greece. Lord Byron was one of the most scandalous public figures of the 19th Century, mostly down to his celebrity persona: that of a brooding, melancholic artist and untameable seducer of women. Those who reference or replicate this figure are often called 'Bryronic' heroes, a popular trope Byron himself would undoubtedly be pleased with. His poetical works often revolve around a similar figure in awe with the immense presence of time, nature, and human experience.
In good condition with the first and last gatherings loosening at the bottom end (first few pages with residual tape), forward blank coming away more significantly, ink inscription to forward blank, corners gently bumped, boards lightly worn, light foxing throughout. Illustrated with occasional tissue-guarded engravings. Fully bound in tan calf leather with raised spine bands, contrasting leather title label with gilt lettering, gilt edge dentelles, marbled endpapers and fully marbled edges. 22 x 14 cm. Pp. [4], [iii], xxxix, 716.
