Fourth edition. A copy of The Queen's Wake by James Hogg, containing the ownership inscription of Robert Munro Furguson (1802-1868), Scottish liberal politician and military general. The author, Hogg, became a significant figure in the Scottish literary scene despite humble beginnings as a shepherd. He was mostly self-taught, and this lengthy narrative poem features some scenes of the rural life he had known hidden amongst the main plot, which surrounds a poetry competition organised by Mary, Queen of Scots.
In good condition with a heavily sunned spine and upper board section, some rubbed conpartments and handling stains to the exterior. Inside, lightly foxed with aforementioned inscription. Holding firmly. Half-bound in calf with pink cloth boards, raised spine bands and accmpanying black title label, marbled endpapers, and a marbled block edge. 21 x 13.5 cm. iv, pp. 362.
